The Standby

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 1
Ok, so forgive my absence. But, interestingly enough, it was largely fueled by drastic developments among my relationships - romantic, familial and platonic. That can certainly take a toll on a girl, and leave a usually CHATTY individual like myself rather speechless.

In any event, I fell off but did not forget, because there was no way I could keep from unloading it all onto this space. Which I fully intend to do! Gotta catch up for lost time.

Now, down to business. The catalyst for my writing this entry was driven by a phone call I received late last night. It was from a former flame for lack of a better term. I'll call him Reggie, because I can't think of much else.

Anyway, he and I have had a spotty situation, at best. We met in the spring, and it looked like it was off to a great start. He was cute and cuddly... And, while we didn't have anything in common intellectually, I admittedly was drawn to him on a more physical level. And, lacking options, I said "Why not?" Not my most logical approach, but decided to roll with the punches on this one.

In any event, we started out casually spending time together, and while the "relationship" was largely superficial, I carried on. However, when it started to taper off, I actually got annoyed. I mean, SERIOUSLY? I was a catch for him. Not conceited by ANY means, I promise you, but given his past, and the girl he was involved with before me, I'd say I was a great find.

Then, his calls would come infrequently and at VERY inconsiderate hours. And at first (because this wasn't going to be my Prince Charming) I let it slide. BUT, after the fourth attempt of him reaching me at late night hours, I told him to skip it and lose my number in the process. It went a little something like this:

Him: So what's good.

Me: I am. I'm fabulous, actually.

Him: That's right. So can I see your fabulous self?

Me: Why?

Him: Because I miss you.

Me: That's funny. Seems like you lost my number.

Him: Nah, it's just been crazy. Thinking about you though.

Me: Then I'll be on your mind like crazy after you hear the dial tone.

Now that was bold, even for me. But it felt GOOD. And just like that, I kicked my standby to the curb.

Moral of the Story: Standbys are JUST that. But when they abuse their status, it's time to kick them to the curb. You'll feel better. Trust me. I do.
